Our aim is to promote the feeling by all students that:

“They can do Maths”

We encourage -

" All students to feel confident in their work."

" All students to achieve their full potential. "

" Students to gain satisfaction and enjoyment from their work."

Setting

Years 7 - 11

In years 7 – 11 Maths classes are taught in ability groups.

Each year has 8 sets.

Teaching in ability groups allows the work to be directed at the appropriate level of ability for each student. This maximises for each student the understanding and the feeling that they “can do maths”. Thus the enjoyment, competence and confidence of students are increased.

On arrival in year 7, students are placed into Maths sets using their Key Stage 2 Maths score, where available, in addition to consultation with their Year 6 teachers.

New students arriving at other times in the year or in any year group are placed in appropriate sets after discussion with Key Stage leaders and any information received from previous schools.

Movement between sets is considered throughout the year but generally following internal assessments. The Head of Department coordinates the changes with discussion between teachers and consideration in taken of classwork, homework and general attitude as well as examination result.

The setting of all students is considered at the end of year 9 in light of the Key Stage 3 assessments but the band may be influenced by their performance and option choice within science.
