At Key Stage 3 all pupils study Science for 12% of curriculum time. Key Stage 3
Curriculum In years 7 and 8 pupils are taught in broad ability bands (X1, Z1, Y1) (X2, Z2) (X3, Z3, Y3). In year 9 pupils are set according to their scientific ability in 8 different sets (Y1- set1, Z1 –set2, X1 –set 3, X2 – set 4, Z2 set 5, Z3- set 6, X3- set 7, Y3- set 8). CAT scores and levelled assessments over the year are used to assist in the setting process at the end of year 8. All pupils follow the Exploring Science scheme work. Assessment judgements are made through a series of levelled tasks and end of year tests. Key Stage 4 Curriculum At Key Stage 4 Science is studied for a minimum of 20% of curriculum time. In year 10 pupils may choose one of three pathways, but all lead to a minimum of 2 GCSEs or equivalent.
1. AQA Science A This is a one year course with modular assessment. A 1 x 60 minute exam module is taken in January with two additional 60 minute exam modules taken in June. Each module is for one subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) and is worth 25 % of the final examination mark. In addition to these exams, pupils will undergo coursework (ISA) set by the exam board, worth 25% of the final mark. The qualification will be certificated at the end of Year 10. In year 11 pupils will follow the AQA GCSE Additional Science. This is a linear course with all examinations being taken at the end of the year. Coursework (ISA) worth the final 25% is also taken in school during Year 11.
AQA Biology, Chemistry and Physics. If this option is taken all three subjects must be taken at GCSE and Triple Science will have to be selected as one option choice. Pupils will study each subject for 10% of curriculum time. Each course is linear and is examined in entirety at the end of Year 11. Again, coursework will be completed for each separate science. We strongly advise anyone who is considering Science at A level to take the Triple Science option.
3. BTec First Diploma or Certificate in Applied Science
This course will be followed by pupils whose target grades would be GCSE grade D or below. There is no examination for this course but continuous assessment of assignments which are both internally and externally verified. The BTec Extended Certificate is worth the equivalent of 2 GCSEs at grade C or above. The BTec Diploma is worth the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at grade C or above. |
